This was written for the bar mitzvah of Daniel, one of the boys in my Jewish Renewal community the London Ruach Chavurah (January 2008). Daniel is a talented multi-instrumentalist, and I wanted to create a piece of music that was quick to learn, that also had some rhythmic interplay between the parts to appeal to his musical mind. The nigun was sung early in the service to build the celebratory energy – and communal spirit – as the congregation and bar mitzvah boy prepared for the life transition being marked.
